Late 19th Century European Romantic Allegorical Portrait Muse Oil Canvas Signed
This fine salon oil portrait, dating back to the late 19th - early 20th century, represents an allegorical reflection on the nature of art. On the canvas, most likely, is captured the exalted image of the Muse Polyhymnia (Greek Πολυύμνια - "many hymns") - one of the nine ancient Greek muses, daughter of Zeus and the goddess of memory Mnemosyne. She is considered the patroness of sacred chants, solemn hymns, as well as the art of pantomime and oratorical mastery. Her brow is crowned with a laurel wreath, a symbol of divine inspiration and the immortality of the creative spirit, and her pensive, detached gaze is directed into the distance. She seems to listen to the divine music of the invisible spheres, channeling this eternal harmony through gifted and talented individuals into our world. The masterful construction of the composition and the flawless work with light and shadow give the image an almost sculptural volume. This portrait does not simply demonstrate the highest technical mastery of an artist of the Romantic era, but will also become a wonderful decoration for the collection or interior of any ccreative individual.
