Silver Snuffbox Of A Famous Surgeon, Henri De La Belinaye, 19th Century
Attractive silver and vermeil snuffbox, all sides decorated with Indian flowers on a chased background. The flowers are lightly gilded (with some wear).
The vermeil interior bears a finely engraved inscription:
“Souvenir de Edward Richardson et Henri de la Belinaye.”
Edward Richardson (1812–1869) and Henry de la Belinaye (1799, London – 1873, Florence) were 19th‑century figures. Henry de la Belinaye was a surgeon, practising in Harley Street from 1823 to 1842, descended from French nobility and active in the London medical scene. He is also said to be the author of the groundbreaking medical text Compendium of Lithotripsy (a new method for treating kidney stones), before pursuing a diplomatic career as physician to several foreign embassies.
Silver hallmarks are present but have not been identified (see photos), along with two swan marks (French control).
Beautiful condition overall, with slight wear to the flowers underneath.
