Pierre Calès - Isère Valley Towards Grenoble - Oil On Cardboard , 73 X 33 Cm
Artist: Calestroupat Pierre Dit Pierre Calès Ou Abbé Calès
Abbé CALÈS (1870 - 1961, France)
Vallée de l'Isère vers Grenoble
Huile sur carton
73 × 33 cm - 88.5 × 45 cm with frame
Unsigned, certificate of authenticity
Waxed solid wood frame
Very good condition.
From a promontory overlooking Chavanex, the view plunges down into the broad Grésivaudan valley bathed in changing light, between brightenings and moving clouds. To the left, a dark-roofed chalet anchors itself in the greenery of the foreground, while in the distance the mountain foothills frame the Isère plain towards Grenoble. The palette - intense blues, muted greens, mauve-gray crests - powerfully conveys the luminous atmospheres typical of the Dauphiné "Hauts Pays".
The large-scale work is characteristic of Abbé Calès's style: a knife-on-board technique that enabled him to capture the fleeting light of mountain landscapes at extraordinary speed. The vigorous impastos, modelled in bold strokes, give the painting a remarkable density of material, in very good condition despite their pronounced relief.
Location: inscription on the back, in the artist's hand: "Route de Theys, à Chavanex. Au fond l'Isère côté Grenoble. »
Authentication: certificate of authenticity issued on August 1, 2008 by Brigitte Valier, member no. 319 of the Union Française des Experts (UFE), specialized in antiques and objets d'art, Galerie Les Aristoloches, Grenoble.
Condition: very good - very few cracks. Frame: solid waxed wood, sober and elegant.
The artist
Jean-Pierre Calestroupat, known as Abbé Calès, was born in Vienne (Isère) on August 31, 1870 and died in Tencin, in the Grésivaudan valley, on October 15, 1961. Educated at the Petit Séminaire and then the Grand Séminaire de Grenoble, he refused the offer of artistic studies from his bishop. In 1902, at the age of 32, he was appointed parish priest of Tencin, a parish he never left.
Marked by Impressionism, his main themes of inspiration were landscapes; he painted and repainted the same places, capturing the ever-changing light and atmosphere. His early works bear witness to the influence of Abbé Guétal, then Ravier, before a true modernity asserts itself. His paintings, often panoramic and executed with thick knife strokes, bring him closer to the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, and even to the Fauves through the exuberance of his colors.
His favorite subject remains the Grésivaudan valley. Painter and parish priest of Tencin, Pierre Calès occupies a special place in the regional artistic landscape, as much for his abundant work as for his extraordinary personality. Standing 1.98 m tall, he was often surrounded by animals, including a crocodile named Alexandre - a facetious tribute to his bishop.
Many of his works are now in the Musée de Grenoble. A retrospective exhibition was held at the Musée de l'Ancien Évêché de Grenoble from September 2001 to April 2002. In his home town of Vienne, rue Pelletan was renamed rue Abbé-Pierre-Calès in 1963.
Work on view at the gallery (07240).
