Jean Després (1889-1980) was a French silversmith from a family of glassmakers. Trained from an early age by a Parisian goldsmith who was a friend of his father, he also took drawing lessons and frequented the Bateau-Lavoir, where he met Braque, Picasso, Modigliani,... During the First World War, he was mobilized as an aviation design mechanic, an experience that left him with a taste for mechanical forms and geometric aesthetics. In 1924, he opened a workshop and boutique in his native Avallon, where he presented highly modern goldsmiths' and jewellers' pieces. He also exhibited regularly at the Salon and opened another store in Paris, frequented by a prestigious clientele that included Josephine Baker.
