Selene Quadriga – Monumental Suite Of Four Horse Heads After The Parthenon

Artist: Guglielmo Ulderigo

Selene Quadriga – Monumental Suite of Four Horse Heads from the Parthenon by Phidias – Greece

This monumental ensemble composed of four life-size horse heads carved in solid white marble represents the mythical “Quadriga of Selene”.

Selene, also known in Antiquity as Mene, is the personification of the Moon in Greek mythology. Daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia, she travels across the heavens each night in her celestial chariot, drawing the lunar orb behind her.

At the far right of the East Pediment of the Parthenon, Selene completes her course and disappears beneath the horizon into the waters of Oceanus. This extraordinary scene symbolizes the cosmic transition between night and day: the exhausted horses of the Moon descend into the sea as Helios rises at dawn on the opposite side of the pediment.

This marble suite is executed after one of the masterpieces of Classical Greek sculpture: the East Pediment of the Parthenon, attributed to Phidias (circa 438–432 BC).

The G. Ulderigo Workshop :

These sculptures originate from the prestigious Roman workshop of Guglielmo Ulderigo. Active during the late 19th century, the atelier became renowned among wealthy Grand Tour travelers for producing archaeological reproductions of exceptional fidelity.

Unlike ordinary decorative reproductions, Ulderigo’s work is distinguished by direct carving in solid marble and by a rigorous anatomical study of the ancient originals.

Features :

Each sculpture retains its original brass identification plaque engraved with:

– “Horse Head from the Quadriga of Selene”

– “East Pediment – Parthenon”

– “Original in Pentelic Marble – British Museum – London”

– “Copy by G. ULDERIGO”

About the Work :

The expressive power of these sculptures is remarkable. Ulderigo masterfully captures the dramatic exhaustion of Selene’s horses at dawn: flared nostrils, pronounced veins across the muzzle, and muscles strained by divine effort.

The treatment of the manes and the nobility of the white marble give the ensemble an exceptional architectural presence.
