Shirvan Carpet - Caucasus. Circa 1880. 150 X 104 Cm
Magnificent Caucasian rug from the Shirvan region of Persia.
Woven and knotted wool on wool in the traditional manner.
Extremely fine, tight weave and knotted stitch.
The piece is supple and light as a cloud.
The velvet is short.
The central blue-gray patina field houses a multitude of hexagonal and diamond-shaped motifs. The organized, repetitive aspect creates a very harmonious whole. This effect is then amplified by subtle hues of great softness.
Borders with arrow motifs.
Outer borders with stylized floral motifs.
Overall, the piece is in very good condition. Some slight and discreet signs of wear in places. This rug is 150 years old!
