Rare Mongo prestige knife – D.R. Congo, late 19th – early 20th century.
Total length: 55 cm – Width: 14.5 cm.
Authentic example in original, uncleaned condition with excellent ethnographic patina.
Striking ceremonial knife from the Mongo / Nkundo peoples of the Congo basin. Forged iron leaf-shaped blade with pronounced central ridge, copper-alloy guard, and an exceptional handle: a broad hardwood pommel richly decorated with brass studs forming a cross pattern, typical of high-status insignia carried by chiefs and dignitaries.
A prestige object intended as a symbol of rank and authority, rather than a functional weapon. Deep patina, original surface oxidation, and undisturbed brass nails confirm the age and authenticity of the piece.
Condition: traditional wear, old oxidation, no repairs or cleaning.
A rare and desirable collector’s item.
