LIGHT CAVALRY OFFICER'S SABRE, Consulate. 32697. Gilt bronze hilt. Three-branch guard richly decorated with a scale pattern. Quillons decorated with an oak branch and a laurel branch. Long-tailed pommel decorated with palmettes and laurel branches with an oak leaf wreath. Curved, fullered Damascus steel blade ending in a fish's tongue. The first third of the blade is richly decorated with a polished, bright gold background depicting intertwined snakes with palmettes, a dagger in a medallion with a laurel branch, a fasces, a sparkling winged Jupiter's fasces, and trophies of arms. Faceted spine signed "Mfture Nationale de Klingenthal Coulaux Frères". Blade length 84.5 cm. Steel scabbard with a projecting gilt brass throat, two richly decorated gilt brass suspension rings featuring foliage, palmettes and flowers in relief, gilt brass rings. France. Consulate.
