"Annunciation In Carved Wood Within A Finely Carved Frame, 1st Half Of The 17th Century."
An interesting 17th-century sculpture featuring the Annunciation scene, exquisitely sculpted by a woodcarver from the central-northern area. The two 60-cm-high reliefs are meticulously modeled, both in terms of their anatomical details and the rhythmic, wet draperies. The angel holding the lily, made of metal elements, is very beautiful, but unfortunately its wings are missing. The sacred scene, which harks back to Tuscan prototypes from the High Renaissance, was conceived to be displayed against a niche or wall, and was therefore not executed in the round. They were subsequently incorporated into a display case and placed within this finely carved antique frame, which displays its beautiful original gilding, which can be dated to a period ranging from the late 16th to the early 17th century.
This work is noteworthy for its size and the value of its carved frame, as well as its sculptural detail.
The internal dimensions of the frame are 73 x 92 cm - the external dimensions are 103 x 122 cm.
