"Maffrash Shahsaven. Persian. Circa 1880. 131 X 102 Cm"
The perfect piece! I heard this exclamation countless times during my ten years living in Turkey, uttered by enthusiasts and collectors alike. At the time, its meaning escaped me. In fact, this piece ticks all the boxes. Its age and rarity are certainly remarkable. Add to that a near-miraculous condition: an ideal, rather compact size. The refined embroidery technique is executed by master craftsmanship. The luminous and deep plant-based hues are instantly captivating. The indigo blues are stunning. This piece is referenced in the best specialist books. I may be forgetting some details, but it's clear that we have here a true little work of art, embodying all the know-how of the nomadic populations of Persia and the Caucasus. Maffrash are the largest carrying bags used in these regions in the past. They were also sometimes used as prams. Essentially, an everyday object made with the utmost care. This one originates from Persia and is attributed to the Shahsaven family. Woven and embroidered wool on wool. Vegetable dyes. Circa 1880 or earlier. Perfect condition. 131 x 102 cm.
