"St. Roch Carved Wood, Late 17th Century"
A late 17th-century carved, stuccoed, and painted wooden statue of Saint Roch. Saint Roch is the patron saint of pilgrims and numerous confraternities, such as surgeons, apothecaries, and dermatologists. This sculpture depicts him bareheaded, standing on a rock, wearing a long toga which he has raised over his right leg to reveal his wound. A cape covers his shoulders, and a scallop shell serves as a collar clasp. At his feet, his dog, which is said to have accompanied him on his pilgrimage, lies holding a loaf of bread in its mouth. Note that the fingers of his left hand are missing. Information and additional photos are available upon request.
