"Hand-carved Marble Satyr Masks From Italy"
Set of two exceptional Italian masks depicting satyrs. Entirely sculpted in marble. Originating from Italy, 19th century. The satyr is a mythological creature from Greek mythology, known as a follower of the god of wine, Dionysus. Satyrs are half-human, half-goat, with pointed ears, goat's legs, a tail, and sometimes horns. They symbolize nature, lust, music, and revelry. They are often depicted as mischievous and debauched figures who dance, play the flute, and seek pleasure. In Roman mythology, they resemble fauns. They embody instinct, seduction, and the wild side of humankind. They can be hung on the wall, or we can have a stand made for them. In good condition, the left horn is broken on both masks.
