Emerging from the first socket, the three vegetal branches take the form of griffins. The upper socket is chased with a series of water lilies and an ivy frieze, while its drip tray features a frieze of pearls and points.
Beautifully executed, of a much higher standard than most candlesticks consistently attributed to Claude Galle, with particularly fine and meticulous chasing, in its superb original gilding.
Rare on the art market, an identical pair was sold at Sotheby's on November 28, 2016, lot 216: Sotheby's Sale.
Attributed to Claude Galle (1759-1815). Empire-Consulate period, possibly even dating to the Directory.
Late 18th, very early 19th century.
