This is an old copy of the original painting belonging to the cycle: "The Mysteries of the Life of Jesus", a work commissioned before 1640 by Flandrine of Nassau, abbess of the Abbey of Sainte Croix. This painting illustrates one of the Sorrowful Mysteries: the child Jesus, dressed in a simple white robe, is represented kneeling meditating on the instruments of his future Passion... The phylactery bears a quote from Psalm 38, verse 18, attributed to King David, this Psalm is part of the penitentiary psalms. " Quoniam ego in flagella paratus sum ( et dolor meus inconspectu meo semper) For I am close to falling ( and my pain is always before me). The work presented has been restored by a renowned professional workshop, the restoration file will be given with the painting (mainly cleaning and some very small repairs, no tears).
