Object description :

"Important Painting Italy Orientalist Neapolitan Fishermen By Emmanuel Joseph Lauret 1850"
Important painting from the 1850s-1860s depicting fishermen unloading fish and nets and joining another group peacefully sitting on the beach.
The origin of these fishermen may, in my opinion, be Italian, Napolitan, Sardinian or other.

The atmosphere, the colors and the lights are typical of the orientalist movement and specific to this painter. Our painting comes from an estate, it has never been on sale before, it is sold in the state as it was hung in the living room, note 4 small holes in the middle on the right.

*Emmanuel-Joseph Lauret known as Lauret aîné, born in Pignans on May 31, 1809 and died in Toulon on June 10, 1882. belongs to the generation of orientalist painters who focus on renderings of light and atmosphere. It marks a turning point in this 19th-century artistic movement. Emmanuel Lauret attended Louis Clérian's classes at the École des Beaux-Arts in Aix-en-Provence. Having settled in Toulon after his studies, he had to flee the cholera epidemic that ravaged the city, and took refuge in his native village. After a trip to Brittany, he exhibited for the first time in 1841 at the Salon in Paris, which he participated in regularly until 1861. Living in Marseille from 1841 to 1843, he then returned to Toulon for several years.
Like others, a great traveler at heart, he developed a passion for Africa and in 1849 he went to Algeria where he lived until 1862. He then discovered the oases of Biskra, El Kantara and Bou-Saâda, whose light and atmosphere would make him modify his technique and lighten his palette. The year of his arrival in Algeria, he exhibited his works at the bookseller Dubos, in Algiers. For about twelve years, he taught drawing at the city's college. In 1851, along with other French painters living in Algeria, including Célestin Liogier, Gustave-Désiré Bournichon, André Durand, Victor Fulconis, and Ernest-Francis Vacherot, he organized an exhibition at the Djenina Palace, the first of what would become the Algerian Society of Fine Arts. The Society, which pioneered the development of artistic activity in the city of Algiers, acquired and exhibited works with a view to founding a museum. It also provided artistic instruction. Struck by paralysis at the end of his life, Lauret was forced to return permanently to Toulon, where he died in 1882.
