Africa has always fascinated explorers, shaping fashions and exoticism. Suffice it to say that in 1775, Europe's largest natural history collection, now known as La Specola, opened to the public in Florence, which brought together numerous specimens of African species.
Our warthog tusks come from Florence, the last part of the extensive collection of an Englishman, Florentine by adoption, who in the 18th century created an incredible colonial-themed cabinet of curiosities in his palazzo. The tusks are still mounted on their original lacquered wooden pedestals, retaining their splendid original patina.
