A Louis XVI period carved and gilded wood doorpost depicting a set of springtime attributes.
In the center, a large simulated wicker basket is beautifully adorned with roses and small flowers and framed on either side by harvest symbols, such as a scythe and a rake, as well as two laurel branches also positioned in a cross in the background.
The whole is crowned with a wide, stylized ribbon bow with three loops, two branches of which escape, winding around the sides, a typical motif of the Louis XVI period.
Below the basket, ribboned in its center, two pieces delicately undulate, gracefully highlighting the composition and adding a sense of movement. They end with a pair of very finely carved fringed pompoms.
This type of composition, combining symbols of spring and harvest, was highly decorative for the period. The carving is fine, well-balanced, with its beautiful original gilding.
Gilded wooden door overlays were notably designed to be significant in size to attract attention and enhance the space.
They decorated the doorways of living rooms, armories, and music rooms, adding a touch of elegance and eloquence to prestigious interiors. These decorations are also found in castles and aristocratic buildings.
Beautiful, finely chiseled and sculpted work from the 18th century, in its original gilding.
