Sylvain Lambré, 1889-1958, Belgian painter of landscapes, popular scenes, city views, seascapes and flowers, watercolorist and draftsman. Son of a musician, he studied at the Brussels Conservatory before turning to painting as an autodidact. From 1923 his beginnings were promising, in 1924 the Galerie Breckpot rue Royale in Brussels secured by contract the monopoly of his production and in 1934 he exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum in New York alongside Constant Permeke and Gustave De Smet. Lambré favored compositions with characters often depicted with pathetic humor in muted tones and in small formats. His style is expressionist. The thick paste is worked with a knife, sometimes highlighted with an outline. Compared sometimes to Maurice De Vlaminck and sometimes to Georges Rouault, he practices an Expressionism with a melancholic content and imbued with a certain naiveté. In 1942 he was struck down by a serious lung disease that kept him in poverty, isolated from the world. He lived in a basement and many dealers and collectors believed him to be dead. In fact, Lambré, in the cold and poverty, like the courageous and persevering man that he was, continued to paint whenever his health permitted, and thus accumulated several hundred works. It was from these that he selected those necessary for an exhibition that he managed to organize in 1955, to everyone's astonishment. This one was a big success, the Belgian State acquired a painting, as did HM Queen Elisabeth. Other exhibitions followed and life seemed to smile on him again when his wife died in 1958 three weeks before an exhibition that would be the last. Desperate, he ended his life by drowning in Schaerbeek, lengthening the list of cursed painters. Artist listed in Bénézit, Arto and Piron. Listed on Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc...
