Object description :

"Georges Briata (1933-2019) The Black Boats In Nazaré, Portugal"
Plays of material sometimes grainy sometimes lighter, a modern and cubist technique in the colors of the 70s of which it bears the date at the bottom right this oil on canvas of the Marseille painter Georges Briata.
The work is offered in a simple gilded frame which measures 95 cm by 113 cm and 81 cm by 100 cm for the canvas alone.
It represents a beach in Nazaré in Portugal with its traditional boats pulled ashore, in the background the village and the famous cliff which dominates it.
In excellent condition, it is signed and dated at the bottom right, titled on the back: "les barques noires".
A work of imposing format, powerful, with chromatic intensity and clashing forms, which leaves no one indifferent.

He entered the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Marseille where he obtained the Stanilas-Torrents Prize and the Poggioli Prize in 1947.
After moving on to the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris, he chose to move towards a more stable career by taking the path of decorative arts, thinking of becoming a decorator or advertising executive.
He was admitted first in the competitive examination of the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris in 1951, and will graduate with a diploma in mural art.
In 1955, he attended the studio of Marcel Gromaire who would have a profound influence on his work.
It was that same year that he was seen as an extra in the film Gervaise, by René Clément.
In 1960, he became a professor at the École supérieure des beaux-arts de Marseille.
Among the members of the competition jury was sculptor Paul Belmondo.
He then met André Maurice at the Jouvène gallery in Marseille, where he exhibited regularly until 1990. He met other painters, poets, and journalists such as Guy Charon, Raymond Guerrier, Eugène Ionesco, Albert Lauzero, André Roussin, Axel Toursky, and Jacques Winsberg.
As success came, he exhibited all over the world: Tokyo, New York, Montreal, Geneva, Beirut, Boston, Grand Rapids, Miami Beach, Lyon, and Paris.
He became a member of the Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts of Marseille on March 15, 2006.
Georges Briata paints nudes, landscapes, portraits, scenes of daily life, circus scenes, bullfights, and jazz bands.
