"Mensurschläger Sword From Heidelberg, 19th Century"
Incredible mensurshläger sword from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Magnificent iron guard surrounding a wooden handle, before a long, pointed iron blade. Academic fencing, or mensur, was a university tradition from the 17th to 19th centuries. Students often dueled, with the victor delivering a blow or slash to the face of the vanquished. The Third Reich banned academic fencing, which was seen as essential to the internal strength of student fraternities. Fellowships were later founded to create an underground space for protest and the continuation of mensur activities.
