Object description :

"Giberne Model 1845 / 1868 Cavalry Imperial Guard / Napoleon III"
Cavalry Cartridge pouch, model 1845, modified 1868, Second Empire era, problably for the mounted companies of the Imperial Guard "Train des Equipages".
It consists of:
1/ A regulation cartridge pouch holder made of 5.5 cm wide, stitched white buffalo leather.
Brass fittings consisting of a square buckle with a prong, a bar, and a shield-shaped plate.
The reverse of the banner bears the marking "TR.GDE." for "Train de la Garde".
The banner is further adorned with a crown surmounting an imperial eagle on a radiant background (added later).
2/ A black leather case of the type used by the regiments of the Imperial Guard Train (similar to Mounted Artillery type).
The sides of the case are reinforced with brass plates with two brass suspension hooks.
The tab is decorated with a brass plate of the Imperial Guard with the Great Arms of Napoleon III on a radiant background. This plate is a good, authentic plate of the Imperial Guard (of the type of the Engineers, Lancers and Chasseurs à Cheval) but it is not regulation for the regiment of the Train of the Guard. The regiment of the Train had a plate decorated with a crowned "N" on a radiant background (as for the "Guides" regiment).
The inside of the case bears the manufacturer's stamp "Baudouin Frères" (supplier of military equipment since 1835) as well as several serial numbers and "6e Ar". It is therefore likely a regulation reuse by the Guard of this cartridge pouch initially assigned to a Mounted Artillery regiment.
The primer pouch has been removed by regulation in 1868.
In its current configuration, this cartridge pouch corresponds also to the regulation for the Imperial Guard Engineers regiment (Génie): a black leather case of the mounted artillery model with a tab decorated with the Great Imperial Arms on a radiant background and a white buffalo banner. However, no marking of the Imperial Guard Engineer is visible on this set.
Dimensions:
(L) 21.5 cm
(H) 11.5 cm
(D) 6 cm
Very good overall condition. The banderolle leather is supple and non-brittle. Sturdy stitching.
