"The Interrupted Feast. Workshop Of Pieter Brueghel The Younger, End Of The 16th Century"
The feast interrupted. Workshop of Pieter Brueghel the Younger, late 16th century Oil on oak panel Presented in a large and beautiful old frame in molded blackened wood, interspersed with gilded motifs. Total dimensions: 71 x 89 cm. The panel alone: 50 x 67 cm This amusing and astonishing Flemish painting, painted at the end of the 16th century, represents an interior which is probably that of a rich landowner. The setting is not that of a patrician family or a wealthy merchant. The furniture is rustic, we see a rake, jugs, a skimmer, and even a watering can! we are in a single room which also serves as a kitchen and dining room. A family, very well dressed (doublets, lace ruffles, feathered hats) is seated around a table well stocked with food, set in front of a large fireplace. A couple of peasants have come to ask for alms, while the woman is chased away, the man on his knees with his hands clasped, begging... But the mistress of the house holds back the arm of her husband armed with a dagger. In the Breughelian universe certain subjects have reached us without knowing the exact title, perhaps proverbs well known in their time? Our painting is similar to a work by Pieter Brueghel the Younger taking up the same theme and currently exhibited in Toulouse in the Hôtel d'Assézat, Fondation Bemberg. Its title is: inn scene. Pieter Brueghel the Younger was born in 1564 in Brussels and died in 1636 in Antwerp. Nicknamed "Brueghel from Hell" because of the fires he loved to paint, Brueghel the Younger remained an imitator of his father's work for a long time, creating works in the same style, and producing a large number of paintings to meet demand. collectors. A few years later, emancipating himself from his father who died young, he used shimmering colors which strongly influenced his contemporaries of the time. This Flemish painter occupied a notable place at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century through his innovative compositions and the extreme care he took in their creation. Pieter Brueghel the Younger will be at the head of a very productive workshop and has many students, including his son Pieter III. Beautiful state of conservation. Sold with a certificate.
