Louis Gabriel Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) The Presentation of a Bride in Seville oil on canvas circa 1830
An interesting genre scene painted by Louis Gabriel Eugene Isabey, featuring the presentation of a bride in late 17th-century Seville.
The bride, on the doorstep of a Grande Maison, is accompanied by her family and a few courtiers. The force of arranged marriages, the constraints of rank and social constraints, meant that future brides rarely chose each other.
