Jacob Desmalter
Mahogany and mahogany veneer chair
Pegged belt
Dimensions : H. 89 ; W.40 ; D. 39 (cm.)

An elegant and rare dining room chair with a chalice back. Ringed baluster front legs, sabre back legs, full belt, moulded and openwork chalice-shaped back.
This backrest model is from the suite of sixty delivered in 1806 for the Fontainebleau palace by Jacob-Desmalter, in beech or lacquered walnut for the various common areas (dining rooms, study cabinets, etc.). Many chairs from this series are kept at the Mobilier National.

François-Honoré-Georges Desmalter: the most fashionable Parisian cabinetmaker at the beginning of the 19th century, he employed more than three hundred workers to fulfil imperial and private orders. The firm went bankrupt in 1813 when the imperial regime defaulted on its payments. François Honoré Georges Jacob Desmalter resurrected the company at the time of the Restoration, regaining the Bourbon clientele that had made his father's reputation.

Condition report: joints without play, wear from use. Polished-wax finish, with braid and piping hand-sewn by our workshop on a super saffron-coloured linen fabric.
