"Grotesque - Carved Panel - Saint Catherine - Popular Art - Haute Epoque - Curiosity"
End of the 16th century France Beautiful carved wooden panel, work of Old Popular art, representation of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, with the wheel and her sword, under her feet is Emperor Maxentius equipped with a crown and 'a scepter. Uncommon humorous work, old and humorous representation where the executioner Maxentius is trampled by the Holy Martyr. Above the representation a beautiful Gothic niche is sculpted. History of Saint Catherine of Alexandria: One of the most famous martyrs of the first centuries. The prettiest and most learned young girl in the entire Empire. She was mystically betrothed to Eternal Wisdom. Her inspiration made her successfully dismiss the objections against the Faith of the philosophers responsible for convincing her of the stupidity of Christianity. Its legend has masked its historical existence, covered with fabulous embroidery. So perhaps the story of her martyrdom which saw her die torn to pieces by four wheels armed with spikes. Very popular in the Middle Ages, she was one of the 'voices' of Saint Joan of Arc. Her cult remains very alive at the monastery located at the foot of Mount Sinai where angels are said to have carried her.
