Low Queen Bergère
Stamped on the front rail
Re-lacquered beech, pegged joints
Dimensions : H. 88 ; D. 52 ; H. seat approx. 45 with cushion ; W. back 56 (cm.)
Paris, circa 1780

A wide, low armchair resting on four fluted, filleted and ringed legs. The waist is moulded and carved. The front is curved. The armrests are scrolled and the back is shaped like a gendarme hat and carved with scrapers (so there are no missing plumes).

Very fine workmanship with "just the right proportions". This chair is representative of the quality of Parisian manufacture at the end of the Ancien Régime and of the art of living at the time, with a coherent fabric.

Jean-Etienne Saint-Georges (1723 - 1790)
Son of Jean Saint-Georges, he obtained his master's degree on 10 April 1747 and went into partnership with one of his brothers-in-law, Claude Séné, to run his father's former workshop on rue de Cléry, opposite rue Saint-Philippe, in Grand Saint-Georges. He distinguished himself in his trade and established relations with a number of merchants, to whom he supplied wood for beds and chairs carved by Pierre Groult, Vincent Nauroy, Nicolas Grouël and Guillaume Hutin. Unfortunately, he lacked order in his business dealings and seriousness in his conduct. The situation of his house was never brilliant. In 1780, Séné parted company with him and, shortly afterwards, Saint-Georges had to file for bankruptcy, which resulted in a deficit of around 16,000 livres. He nevertheless continued to practise until his death.
