Manufacture de Locré

Dinner plate
Hard porcelain, painted and enhanced with gilding
Size: D. 23.5 (cm)

Round plate, the rim very richly decorated with scrolls, arabesques, floral medallions, on very rare black backgrounds. The centre is decorated with friezes and a rosette in grisaille and gilding. This is a very unusual piece in terms of its decoration and quality: a true luxury production during the revolutionary period.

The Locré factory
Founded in 1771 by a craftsman from Germany, this factory quickly became a centre of excellence that lasted until 1830. Its products are recognisable by the blue mark under the cover of two intersecting arrows or torches.

Henri Salembier (1753 - 1820)
Henri Salembier was a Parisian painter and ornamentalist who published a number of decorative books from 1777 onwards. These were hugely successful and were instrumental in developing the vocabulary used in the French decorative arts at the end of the Ancien Régime and during the revolutionary period. Finally, it should be noted that Henri Salembier worked in collaboration with the Manufacture du Duc d'Angoulême: Dihl and Guérhard.

Hard porcelain in Paris in the early 19th century
Unlike earthenware, porcelain manufactures flourished under the Empire, particularly in Paris. The period 1800-1820 can be considered the golden age of porcelain in Paris. There were nineteen porcelain factories in Paris in 1800, but only seven had been founded under the Ancien Régime: Dihl et Guérard, Houzel, Lemaire et Josse, Pouyat et Russinger, Schoelcher, Despréz et Nast.Unlike the last twenty years of the 18th century, which saw a shift from rocaille to antique simplicity, the first thirty years of the 19th century saw the opposite, moving from antique sobriety to rococo. The exceptional decoration on our plate bears witness to the virtuosity of the craftsmen in Paris in the early 19th century. The richness of the polychrome highlights also shows that this is a true quality piece.
