Listed : Artprice, Benezit, Akoun, Wikipedia and numerous various others
Reference Code : 138HSP6P-A.BERONNEAU

Original oil on original panel, signed lower right, titled and dated (19)33 on the back.
Very nice representation of two "Tartanes" in the foreground (the Tartane is a characteristic sailing boat of the Mediterranean, used mainly for fishing) in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and in slightly gray weather. We can very clearly distinguish the busy fishermen at the front of their respective Tartane as well as two sailboats in the distance (on the left), without forgetting the small moored boat (on the left) and another small sailboat (on the right).
André BERONNEAU never forgets any detail; the slightest rope (sheets, halyards), mast ladders, the slightest marine or fishing accessory, are present. The rendering of the colors of the wood of the hull of the boats and that of the sails is still "bluffing" for a 90-year-old work. In this regard, a little cleaning would be beneficial in order to eliminate small dirt as well as the slight yellowing of the varnish.
Beautiful wooden Montparnasse frame.

DIMENSIONS : Unframed : 29,6 x 39,6 cm - Framed : 45,5 x 4,3 x 55,5 cm

PROVENANCE : Recognized french public auction house (from private collection).

Painting : Excellent overall condition for its age but in need of a little cleaning (slightly yellowed varnish, dirt, a few rare fine cracks).
Frame : Vintage carved and molded frame, "Montparnasse" type (1940-1950), in very good overall condition (age wear marks from time). Beautiful patina.

Born in Bordeaux, André BERONNEAU studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris.
Active mainly during the first half of the 20th century, he regularly exhibited his works in the main parisian salons and in particular at the « Salon des Indépendants » between 1926 and 1935.
The painter mainly specialized in the harbor scenes of the Mediterranean coast (Saint-Tropez, Toulon, Martigues, Sainte-Maxime, Sète, etc...) as well as in the landscapes of the south of France and more particularly those of Provence but without forgetting the landscapes and harbors of Brittany and Normandy (Concarneau, Auray, Audierne, Douarnenez, Honfleur) nor the Atlantic coast via Les Sables-d'Olonne, La Rochelle and Royan and down to the Landes region.
He also painted gardens, orchards, flowering trees, old streets in the south of France and Corsica, churches, forest paths, village scenes but also bridges in Paris or elsewhere for which he had a certain predilection.
During the numerous exhibitions in which he participated, André BERONNEAU was awarded numerous prizes and distinctions, including the "Silver Medal" at the « Salon d'Hiver » and the "Prix Fargeon" at the « Salon des Artistes Français ».
