"The Zouave Of The Guard - E. Frémiet 1824-1910 Fremiet"
Dimensions Height: approx. 24 cm Base Ø: approx. 9 cm Weight: 1621 g. Signature On the embankment: E. Frémiet Bears the number 10 on the embankment, which attests to a More cast, therefore during the artist's lifetime.

The first Chasseur Regiment had been formed in 1842 by King Louis Philippe, and their uniform was laid down in 1853. Seasoned elite troops, with a strong esprit de corps, the Zouaves have a reputation for being intrepid and resourceful, as well whimsical and somewhat unruly. The Parisian operetta captures this earthy soldier in the original uniform worn by his exploits during the Crimean War (1855). Emmanuel Frémiet offers us a Zouave de la Garde in a relaxed attitude. He is wearing the oriental outfit designed by Captain de Lamoricière, which consists of a jacket in dark blue cloth edged and adorned with a daffodil braid, without collar or button, open over a sleeveless waistcoat. The sides of the jacket are adorned with a braid pattern that draws a "tombo", a fake pocket, and ends in the shape of a cloverleaf. It is by the color of these tombos, red, white or yellow, that the Zouaves identify their regiments, while the other units recognize themselves by the number inscribed on the collar of the jacket. The chevron at the top of the left sleeve (our Zouave wears none) indicates seniority: 1 chevron is for 7 years of service. From 1866, it will even be 7 years of service.
