"Large Christ "vivo" In Carved Ivory, Flanders XVIIth Century"
Very vigorously sculpted in the round and down to the smallest detail, this sculpture of the living Christ in ivory dates from the end of the 17th century. Work of an Antwerp image maker in the wake of Mathieu van Beveren, born in Antwerp in 1630 and died in Brussels in 1691. This large Christ is represented with his head raised towards the sky, mouth ajar revealing the tongue and teeth, hair with parting median falling on the shoulders in wavy locks, venous network, slightly apparent on the arms; perizonium leaving the left leg uncovered with a wavy lateral drop; legs parallel with the left slightly bent and feet juxtaposed.
