"Stoning Of Saint-etienne. 17th Century Flemish School"
Oil on copper Presented in a rare frame from the same period in carved, gilded wood with foliage decoration. Total dimensions: 52 x 60 cm. The copper alone: 27 x 37 cm The painter who executed our painting must very probably have seen the work of Annibale Carracci (Bologna, 1560 - Rome, 1609) dealing with the same subject and also painted on copper, currently in the collections of the Louvre Museum. He gives us here a “personal” painting, not a cover! Made with a very Flemish sensitivity with bright colors and a background landscape in shades of green and blue. The layout is unpretentious, yet neat, featuring characters with generous muscles. The painting depicts the moment Stephen is dragged out of the city of Jerusalem. His martyrdom supposedly takes place at the Damascus Gate. Stephen or Saint Stephen, learned preacher, known for his well-argued speeches, condemned in Jerusalem to stoning for blasphemy. In fact, he is also the first Christian martyr condemned after the death of Christ. His faith led to the conversion of Saul of Tarsus, known as Saint Paul. Very good state of preservation. Sold with descriptive invoice & certificate.
