"Oil Painting-gabares And Pyroscaphes In Front Of The Esplanade Des Quinconces Bordeaux-1840"
GABARES AND PYROSCAPHES IN FRONT OF THE ESPLANADE DES QUINCONCES BORDEAUX THE PORT OF THE MOON Anonymous By an anonymous artist, this oil on canvas (43 cm x 59 cm), (60 cm x 75 cm with its frame) was produced around 1840, comes close to the spirit of the gouaches of the Bordeaux painter Garneray. “Of relatively naive style, this painting shows the river life of the port of the moon in the first half of the 19th century. Steamboats propelled by paddle wheels transporting passengers on the Garonne; A wooden footbridge, built in front of the esplanade, allows them to embark. The barges protect their cargo either with canvas or with plank roofs. On the bank, tents serve as warehouses. We can see the narrowness between the terrace of the Quinconces and the bank.Indeed, the extension of the quays, to the detriment of the river, will only be done in the following century. This iconographic painting appears in the very beautiful work of Jacques Sargos Bordeaux "At the time of the port of the moon" Editions L'HORIZON CHIMÉRIQUE
