"Winter Landscape With Skaters On A Frozen River. Johann Vollerdt (1708-1769)"
Signed lower right Oil on panel Old frame with reversed profile in molded and blackened wood. Total dimensions: 43 x 51 cm. The panel alone: 24 x 33 cm On our painting, the painter accurately describes a snowy winter landscape where villagers indulge in the joys of skating on a frozen river, small anecdotal details remind us of Flemish paintings. The hamlet built on the right bank gives a glimpse, emerging from a light mist, of the bell tower of a church and on the left of the composition, two villagers with their backs loaded with a bag take a path at the bottom of a hill. In the center, the vanishing point, stretches along the river towards a distance lined with villages and gradually disappears towards the horizon. Winter is here, and the feeling of cold is accentuated by these bare trees with their branches covered in frost. A great poetry emerges from this lovely painting in grey-blue tones dotted with a few brown-red dots that are the clothes of the characters and all the meticulousness of Nordic painters is found there. Vollerdt or Vollaert (Jan or Johann Christian) was born in Liepzig in 1708 and died in Dresden on July 27, 1769. A pupil of Alexandre Triele, he painted landscapes and in particular winter scenes with skaters, in small formats, mostly made time on panel. We see characters and animals treated with spirit.
