Object description :

"Small Cylinder Desk In Precious Wood, Louis XV / Louis XVI Transition Style - Late 19th Century"
Transition style cylinder desk, beautifully crafted, richly inlaid and accompanied by bronze fittings. This Parisian-made piece of furniture in rosewood veneer, rosewood and natural or stained wood, has a cylinder with two shaped bronze knobs, sliding upwards. This cylinder is decorated with a marquetry of lozenges forming cubes, with in the center a large composition in the shape of a medallion. This is illustrated with several musical instruments (flute, violin, lute, drum, etc.) accompanied by a score and laurel branches. This ornamentation is topped with a large harmonious knot and is surrounded by rosewood. This cylinder closes with an original lock in the upper part of this piece of furniture. In perfect working order, it is completed with a bronze entry and an added key. Inside, a sliding shelf has a rosewood frame, miter cut, surrounding a new red lamb leather, with cold stamp, golden stamp and golden central motif. The interior, in mahogany, is made up of five compartments of different sizes. On each side, two large projecting quarter-circles that allow the cylinder to slide, have a rosewood and rosewood front, decorated with bronze fittings in the upper and lower part, in the shape of a long leaf. At the top of this furniture is an openwork brass gallery with partial return on the front. This surrounds a marquetry of cubes of natural or stained wood. On the front, under the cylinder, the belt is made up of two drawers also inlaid with cubes. These drawers are provided with a chiseled entry of twigs, an original lock in working order and are surrounded by rosewood. Their interior is in oak. Between the two drawers, we notice a notched part allowing the optimal installation of the future purchaser of this desk. The sides of this piece of furniture take up the marquetry of the facade. The back is made up of a rosewood frieze with net, harmonizing with the rest of the furniture. This mid-desk sits atop four curved legs with rosewood veneer fronts with butterfly wings, and ends in sleek clogs. Its small size makes it a rare in-between piece of furniture that can be installed both in a room with limited space, and to delimit an office space in a living room. Its manufacturing quality and its wood species make this refined desk a fine example of the know-how of the Parisian workshops of the 19th century. ******** Period: Late 19th century Excellent condition.
