Rare Canopy Bed Revolutionary Period

Rare and exceptional canopy bed commemorating the Battle of Valmy, France, circa 1793-1795. Unique copy of a commissioned work that has come down to us. This bed commemorates the famous battle of Valmy which took place on September 20, 1792, marked by a decisive victory of the French army led by Charles-François DUMOURIEZ over the Prussian invader. The two uprights of the bed are topped with a triangular fluted pediment centered with a blue, white and red cockade. One is painted with a scene representing the raising of the volunteers who will take part in the battle, following the declaration of the Fatherland in danger by the legislative assembly. This episode takes place in a campaign tent, showing a host of combat contenders ready to sign their pledge. The second illustrates the Battle of Valmy at the moment of victory. Near the famous mill, General KELLERMANN, accompanied by a deputy, officers and soldiers, celebrates the victory by brandishing hats, to the sound of guns still smoking. On the back of each is painted a hanging garland in the colors of the Revolution. The canopy is placed on four fluted columns, the ends of which are missing, and supports very beautiful trimmings and period curtains, always using the same chromatic theme. These fabrics are slightly faded, with some tears, and gaps, but this set is still in exceptional condition. No comparable piece is known to date. The rare examples of furniture from this period, with such "typical" decorations, can be found in institutions such as the Carnavalet Museum. H. 214 cm, W. 195 cm, D.110 cm.
