Hardwood spoon, anthropomorphic. Philippines. 20th century, circa 1950-70. Ifugao spoons combined aesthetic and spiritual functions, in a utilitarian object. The sculptures often represent local deities, ancestors, or even pregnant women. On a daily basis, these spoons have long been used for the consumption of soup or rice, the main resource of this region.
