Son and pupil of David I, influenced by Rubens, he was famous as a genre painter, but also devoted himself to portraiture, landscape and historical and religious painting: "He took his genius from nature, his taste for his father, and his perfection of Rubens. Several thousand works can be attributed to him, and his virtuosity was immense. Many tapestries, both Flemish and French, large series of engravings disclosed his works and propagated his influence until the end of the 18th century. Thanks to a very strong demand, his workshop had become a real small industry. This subject repeatedly treated (with variants and different formats) by the painter himself, his pupils and collaborators, has left us a number of paintings currently in the collections of museums in Europe and in private hands. Born in Egypt into a fairly wealthy Coptic family, Saint Anthony, a fervent Christian, from the age of twenty took the Gospel literally and distributed all his goods to the poor, then went to live in the desert as a hermit. There, like Christ, he suffered the temptations of the Devil. If for Christ it only lasts forty days, the time spent in the desert, for Antoine it is much longer and more difficult, since he spent his life there. The demons do not hesitate to attack him. But Antoine resists everything and does not allow himself to be fooled by the tempting visions that multiply. To flee from the torture of his visions which tormented him, in 312 he changed the desert and went to Thebaid, on Mount Qolzum, where the monastery of Saint Anthony is today. Good state of preservation. Sold with invoice & certificate.
