"Large Marble Sculpture "child In A Cage" After Jb Pigalle Napoleon III Period XIX"
Large sculpture in white statuary marble after * Jean Baptiste Pigalle Napoleon III XIX th century. The pensive-faced child is shown seated with his left hand resting on his chin and his right hand holding a delicately carved open birdcage. It is signed on the Pigalle terrace. The sculpture rests on a turquin blue marble base underlined by a frieze of pearls in gilded mercury bronze (cleaned by our workshop, slight wear) The original work is currently in the Louvre Museum, its description and history are as follows : "Presumed portrait of Armand Louis Joseph de Marmontel, Marquis de Brunoy (1748-1781), only son of Jean Pâris de Marmontel (1690-1766), godfather of Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764) and court banker. Salon of 1750, n°62. Quoted in 1766 in the inventory after the death of the sponsor. Acquired by Pigalle at the sale of the Marquis de Brunoy, December 2, 1776, n°63. Quoted in 1785 in the inventory after the death of the sculptor. Sale of the possessions of the Prince of Soubise announced in the "Posters"... n°350, December 16, 1787. Donjeux sale, Paris April 29, 1793, n°491. Property of the Fontenillat family. Pontoise, collection of Mme Giraud, née Fontenillat. Fouché Collection, 1869. Costantini Collection, by inheritance.
