"Senegal St-louis 1948 By Zbynek Stolovsky"
Very beautiful work by the Czech artist Zbynek STOLOVSKY (1909-1956) depicting a view of SAINT-LOUIS in SENEGAL in 1948. It is a Gouache signed, located and dated lower left, measuring 49 x 62, 5cm. The colors are fresh; the paper is a little curled and there are some small gaps. Zbynek STOLOVSKY is a Czech artist; in June 1947, he landed in Dakar, then moved to Saint-Louis. From there, he made short trips to the surrounding area as well as longer expeditions to the French colonies in the Sahel region. In 1949, he moved to Bamako, Mali, which would be the starting point for his journey along the Niger River to the interior of Mali, then French Sudan, where he stopped at the crossroads of caravan routes in Timbuktu. (1951) and visits the towns of Gao, Hombori and Moipi. In the fall of 1951, he moved to Niamey, where he stayed until December 1953. At the turn of 1953/54, he set sail for the Gulf of Benin and arrived in Cotonou in June 1954. In January 1956, he embarked for Dakar then crossed the Atlantic to Buenos Aires, where he died shortly afterwards. His works are a testimony of the life of the inhabitants of the former African colonies. He exhibited in Saint-Louis (1948), Dakar (1949), Niamey (1953), Bamako (1954) and Cotonou (1954). He also recorded his observations in a travelogue, which was published in Prague in 1989. Free delivery in Paris possible.
