"Circle Of George Romney (1734 – 1802)"
Circle of George Romney(1734 – 1802) “An Actress”
A charming portrait of a stylish young woman holding a mask in the style of George Romney. The mask probably indicates that her profession was that of an actress. The painting dates to the late 18thearly 19thcenturies and is splendidly presented in a carved frame. The frame was possibly part of the interior of a panelled room, where the painting may have been inset in the panelling.
Romney was the most fashionable artist of his day, painting many society figures.Perhaps his best known portraits are of his muse Emma Hamilton, mistress of Lord Nelson. Another popular sitter was his friend and patron the playwright Richard Cumberland, whose portrait he painted on several occasions.
